Abergavenny RC Cycling Santas

More than 100 cycling Santas of many guises, shapes and sizes took to the streets of Abergavenny on Saturday to celebrate the switching on of the Christmas lights.

The white-bearded bikers, including numerous members of Abergavenny Road Club, gathered in the square outside the Post Office and rode around town behind Father Christmas and Mrs Claus.

Outside the Town Hall snow machines created a temporary winter wonderland while hundreds of spectators enjoyed the musical entertainment, including an attempt to create the town’s longest ever conga line.

Mayor and Mayoress of Abergavenny Chris and Sheila Woodhouse were joined on stage by the family of double Olympic cycling silver medallist Becky James.

Becky herself was unable to attend but the James family was well represented by her mum and dad Christina and David, younger sisters and grandfather.

Cllr Woodhouse said the event had been ‘an overwhelming success’.

“We had around 110 cycling Santas in the end and they’ve already said they’re keen to do it again next year,” he said.
